Avengers: Age of Ultron Dominates Overseas While Furious 7 is a Four-Time #1

April ended with a whimper at the North American box office as two new movies opened in wide release, one not even getting into the Top 10, allowing Universal Pictures’ Furious 7 to dominate at the box office for a fourth weekend in a row.
Overseas was a different story as Marvel Studios’ mega-blockbuster sequel Avengers: Age ofUltron opened in 44 territories, #1 in all of them, to amass $201.2 million globally in 55% of the marketplace. 175 international IMAX theaters accounted for $10.4 million of that amount, an international IMAX record for a movie not opening in China, surpassing Interstellar‘s $7.2 million. Some of the top markets for Avengers: Age of Ultron included Korea with $28.2 million, the UK with $27.3 million, and Russia with $16.2 million.

Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Sets Ewan McGregor as Lumiere


The final major role left to be cast, Walt Disney Pictures’ live-action Beauty and the Beast has found its Lumiere! According to a story today at The Hollywood Reporter, Ewan McGregor will play the animated candlestick opposite the previously-announced Ian McKellen as Cogsworth. The feature is also set to star the Harry Potter franchise’s Emma Watson as Belle, The Guest‘s Dan Stevens as Beast, Dracula Untold and The Hobbit‘s Luke Evans as Gaston, Frozen and “The Book of Mormon’s” Josh Gad as LeFou, Kevin Kline as Maurice (Belle’s father), Emma Thompson as Mrs. Potts, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as Plumette, the feather duster.

Galaxy Quest TV Series in the Works


Deadline reports that Paramount Television is developing the film Galaxy Quest for a television revival. One of the film’s original writers Robert Gordon, who will likely pen the pilot script, is set to executive produce the series along with the original director Dean Parisot and producer Mark Johnson.

Mitch Pileggi Confirms a Return to The X-Files

Though star David Duchovny revealed earlier this month that he would be returning for the upcoming revival, “The X-Files” star Mitch Pileggi confirmed on Twitter today that he’ll be back as Walter Skinner.
Pileggi made his debut appearance as Assistant Director Skinner in Episode 20 of the show and would go on to appear in 81 episodes of the nine season series.

After a more experimental teaser, Open Road Films has revealed the full trailer for Sundance Film Festival favorite Dope, which you can check out below!
Malcolm (Shameik Moore) is carefully surviving life in a tough neighborhood in Los Angeles while juggling college applications, academic interviews, and the SAT. A chance invitation to an underground party leads him into an adventure that could allow him to go from being a geek, to being dope, to ultimately being himself.
Written and directed by Rick Famuyiwa (Brown SugarOur Family Wedding), Dope co-stars Zoë Kravitz, Blake Anderson, Tony Revolori, Kiersey Clemons, Kimberly Elise and Forest Whitaker, with a summer release date of June 19. 

Marvel Developing TV Project with Oscar Winner John Ridley


Entertainment Weekly brings word that Marvel Entertainment is teaming up with Academy Award winner John Ridley (12 Years a Slave) to develop a new TV series. The outlet notes that the deal “involves reinventing an existing Marvel superhero character or property for ABC,” though neither has commented on the matter. Ridley has had a long career in television where he currently works on “American Crime” and has previously executive produced “The Wanda Sykes Show,” “Barbershop,” and “Third Watch,” among others.

The Jason Sudeikis-led Fletch Reboot Heads to Relativity

The Fletch franchise has found a new home today as The Hollywood Reporter brings word that the big screen rights to the Gregory McDonald novel series have moved from Warner Bros. Pictures to Relativity. There, plans are underway to get a new Fletch film into production with the previously-attached Jason Sudeikis (Horrible Bosses, “Saturday Night Live”) still set to headline. 

Universal Sets First Look Deal with Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment

Universal Pictures today announced it has entered into a two-year, first look production agreement with Robert Kirkman’s Skybound Entertainment. Since opening its doors, Skybound Entertainment has grown into a multiplatform entertainment company with award-winning television programming, film and digital content. The announcement was made by Co-Presidents of Production Peter Cramer and Jeffrey Kirschenbaum.

Jimmy Jean-Louis to Return as The Haitian on Heroes Reborn

Another cast member from the original “Heroes” has signed on for NBC’s upcoming 13-episode event series, “Heroes Reborn.” According to a story today at Deadline, Jimmy Jean-Louis is set to reprise his role as The Haitian, who has the ability to both erase people’s memories and to both block their powers. He joins the returning Jack Coleman and Masi Oka alongside franchise newcomers Robbie Kay, Zachary Levi and Jack Coleman.

Lionsgate Sets The Hunger Games Filmmakers on Homer’s The Odyssey


Lionsgate is today calling forth the song of a Muse as Deadline reports that plans are underway to develop a new big screen take on Homer’s ancient poem, The Odyssey. Francis Lawrence, who directed the second, third and fourth films in The Hunger Games franchise will helm withMockingjay scribe Peter Craig writing and Nina Jacobson, responsible for the entire Hunger Games franchise, producing.
Believed to have been written near the end of the 8th century BC, The Odyssey is a sequel of sorts to Homer’s The Iliad. It follows the adventures of the warrior Odysseus and the fantastic trials and tribulations he encounters on his decade-long journey home to Greece after the fall of Troy. Among the obstacles he encounters in his journey are the Cyclops Polyphemus, the six-headed Scylla, the whirlpool sea monster Charybdis and, as pictured above in the 19th century painting by John William Waterhouse, the birdlike sirens.
The Odyssey has been adapted several times for the big screen in various iterations, ranging from the straightforward 1954 adaptation Ulysses, starring Kirk Douglas in the lead, to Joel and Ethan Coen’s 2000 hit, O Brother, Where Art Thou?, starring George Clooney in a musical 1930s adaptation set in the deep south.
Production on The Odyssey is planned to begin in early 2016 with Erik Feig, Jim Miller and James Myers overseeing for Lionsgate.

Warner Bros. Taps Goosebumps Scribe for Gremlins Reboot

Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has hired screenwriter Carl Ellsworth to pen the reboot ofGremlins. No stranger to horror, Ellsworth has previously drafted the remake of The Last House on the LeftRed DawnDisturbia, and the upcoming Goosebumps.

Ed Skrein Confirmed as Ajax in Deadpool

For some time now, much of the mutant cast for Deadpool has been revealed, save for actor Ed Skrein. Today, however, Skrein took to Twitter to confirm that he will be playing none other than Ajax, one of the characters directly responsible for Wade Wilson becoming Deadpool in the source material. Previously an attendee at the Weapon X program, Ajax was transformed into a killing machine that couldn’t feel pain in addition to having increased strength and speed. 

TRON 3 Welcomes Back Olivia Wilde as Quorra!

First rumored last month, it appears that Walt Disney Pictures is, indeed, moving forward with TRON 3 as The Hollywood Reporter today confirms Olivia Wilde will be reprising her role as everyone’s favorite ISO, Quorra! She joins fellow returning lead Garret Hedlund, who is set to return as Sam Flynn. TRON: Legacy helmer Joseph Kosinski will also be back with plans for production to take place in Vancouver later this year.

The Future Belongs to The Mad in New Mad Max: Fury Road Poster

Warner Bros. Pictures has debuted a brand-new poster for Mad Max: Fury Road which you can check out in the gallery below. Mad Max: Fury Road is the fourth film of George Miller’s Road Warrior/Mad Max franchise and is co-written and directed by Miller. The post-apocalyptic action film is set in the furthest reaches of our planet, in a stark desert landscape where humanity is broken, and most everyone is crazed fighting for the necessities of life.
Within this world of fire and blood exist two rebels on the run who just might be able to restore order. There’s Max (Tom Hardy), a man of action and a man of few words, who seeks peace of mind following the loss of his wife and child in the aftermath of the chaos and Furiosa (Charlize Theron), a woman of action and a woman who believes her path to survival may be achieved if she can make it across the desert back to her childhood homeland.
Also starring Nicholas Hoult, Hugh Keays-Byrne, Nathan Jones, Zoe Kravitz, Riley Keough, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Mad Max: Fury Road opens in 2D and 3D theaters on May 15.


Syfy Greenlights Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Incorporated


Syfy announced today it has greenlit to pilot ‘Incorporated,” a futuristic espionage thriller from Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s Pearl Street Productions, CBS Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions. Set in a future where companies have unlimited power, “Incorporated” tells the story of executive Ben Larson, forced to change his identity in order to infiltrate a cut-throat corporate world, to save the woman he loves. In the process, he will take on the entire system – with deadly consequences.

The dedicated scientists behind the hit theme park attraction Jurassic World have today delivered a little Easter surprise, Tweeting out an image from the park’s incubation room with a QR code and the message, “The hunt is on. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy 2’ Will Begin Filming in 2016, Karen Gillan’s Nebula to Return


James Gunn stays pretty active on social media and is as open as he can be with fans about his work on Guardians of the Galaxy, which goes against the typical secrecy of Marvel Studios. Then again, Guardians isn’t your typical Marvel film — the superhero space opera was a bit risky for the studio, but the weird and wonderful film really hit a home run with fans and critics alike. Gunn is currently working on the script for the sequel, and as usual, he has a few updates to offer.
Using the new social media service Periscope (via Comic Book Movie), Gunn talked with fans about Guardians of the Galaxy 2, revealing that the film will begin shooting in February 2016 at Pinewood Studios in Atlanta.

‘The Flash’ Solo Film Eyes Phil Lord and Chris Miller to Direct


Following their massive success with the Jump Street franchise and The LEGO Movie, just about everyone wants to get into the Phil Lord and Chris Miller business. The duo have proven their value with both animated and live-action features (as well as pulling off the near-impossible by making a great comedy sequel), so it’s hardly surprising to hear that Warner Bros. is seeking the pair to join the DC Universe.

James Gunn Offers Update on Guardians of the Galaxy 2


We’re almost two years away from the release of Guardians of the Galaxy 2, which perhaps may seem like a long wait, but it seems like just yesterday Marvel’s The Avengers was in theaters and now “Age of Ultron” is less than a month away. Earlier this week, writer/director James Gunn took to the social media broadcasting app Periscope to answer some fan questions and in doing so offered an update on the Guardians of the Galaxy 2 story treatment and script.

George R.R. Martin Developing New HBO Series Captain Cosmos


The Hollywood Reporter brings word that “Game of Trones” creator George R.R. Martin is developing a new series at HBO. Tentatively titled “Captain Cosmos,” the series is said to focus on a young sci-fi writer living at the dawn of the TV age in 1949 where he spends time writing stories that no one else would dare pen.

Trailer and Poster for Survivor, Starring Pierce Brosnan and Milla Jovovich

Alchemy has released the trailer and poster for Survivor, starring Pierce Brosnan and Milla Jovovich (who is celebrating the birth of her new daughter – congrats!). Survivor will be released in theaters and On Demand on May 29.
In the film, after being mysteriously framed for a terrorist bombing, a Foreign Service Officer (Milla Jovovich) must evade government capture and death by a ruthless assassin (Pierce Brosnan) in order to stop the real perpetrators’ master—and much deadlier—plan.
Survivor is directed by James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) and also stars Dylan McDermott, Angela Bassett and Robert Forster.

Hugh Jackman to Star in ‘Apostle Paul’ Biblical Drama for Producers Ben Affleck and Matt Damon


Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are about to get themselves some of that faith-based drama money. Cha-ching. The duo are producing the upcoming biblical drama Apostle Paul, with Hugh Jackman signing on to star as the film’s titular protagonist, a man responsible for writing almost half of the books in the New Testament. In modern terms, yeah, he was kind of a big deal.

Disney Is Making a Live Action ‘Winnie the Pooh’ Movie

It was inevitable: Disney is making a live action Winnie the Pooh movie because of course Disney would make a live action Winnie the Pooh movie. The studio’s tactic of bringing their animated properties into the live action realm has already paid off with Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent and Cinderella, so why not pay another visit to the Hundred Acre Wood and let a live-action Christopher Robin hang out with a CGI Piglet?

G.I. Joe 3 Enlists Aaron Berg for Scripting Duties


The Hollywood Reporter brings word today that Paramount Pictures has enlisted Section 6screenwriter Aaron Berg to pen the upcoming G.I. Joe 3. Previous drafts for the film have been written by Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles‘ Evan Daugherty and Shooter‘s Jonathan Lemkin, though Berg will write an all-new script.

House of Lies Renewed for a Fifth Season

Showtime announced today that it has renewed “House of Lies” for a fifth season with plans for 10 new episodes to air in 2016. The series stars Don Cheadle in his three-time Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning performance as Marty Kaan and features Kristen Bell (Frozen, “Veronica Mars”) as his razor-sharp partner, along with Emmy winner Ben Schwartz (“Parks and Recreation”), Josh Lawson (Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues), Donis Leonard Jr. (“Criminal Minds”) and Emmy winner Glynn Turman (“In Treatment”).
